A message of support to all ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ students

A message to all students at ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ from Dr. Lane Trotter, President.

You are likely aware of the news that the college is facing some budget challenges following changes to the international student program.Μύ

What has changed

A drop in the number of expected international students means the college needs to look for savings. The decline is due to policy changes by the federal government. Despite introducing cost-savings measures, the college has been forced to look at eliminating some vacant positions and layoffs across all employee groups.

Focus on educational services

The college’s focus is on ensuring every student, regardless of where they are from, continues to receive the excellent educational services they rightly expect, while we manage our budget. I want to assure you that your education and completion of your academic goals remains the college’s top priority.

Camosun grads are in high demand among businesses, employers and industries, or if you’re planning on continuing your post-secondary education elsewhere, you will be well-equipped to succeed in your studies.

Though we have not cancelled any programs to date, we are carefully monitoring enrolment numbers as we do expect a reduced number of international students. Our team will continue to look for ways to keep programs whole.

International students are welcome

Some international students are likely feeling stressed given changes to immigration policies and, in particular, the post-graduate work permit program. To each and every international student, I want to affirm that you belong here at ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ and you are valued members of the college community. The presence and contributions on campus and in classrooms from international students are critical pieces of the Camosun Advantage.

The team at Camosun International has been notifying students around every change announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Any international student with a concern or question should reach out to an international advisor.

Restructuring educational delivery

As a result of these challenges, the college has prioritized the needs of students and focused on college sustainability. We will be redistributing faculty, instructors, staff, and student numbers, while restructuring the delivery of education services into five areas of study:

  • Arts, Access and Academic Preparation.
  • Business (including Sport Management).
  • Health, Human Services and Sport Science.
  • Science and Technology.
  • Trades, Training and Professional Studies.

These are significant changes that will take time to implement but the goal is to ensure we continue to give students the best possible educational experience. I want to emphasize that is very unlikely you will be negatively impacted by any of these changes.

Please take care of yourself and each other and remember that support is available.
